The Creature Conservancy is working to Get Alligators Tangible Ownership Regulation!

The G.A.T.O.R Project

Michigan does not regulate alligator ownership- so unwanted alligators and other crocodilians are not only showing up regularly at animal shelters, they are being dumped in our waterways. The solution is relatively simple: the ownership of all crocodilians should be regulated by the State of Michigan.

Currently, unregulated ownership of crocodilian species leads to tragic outcomes for virtually every alligator, caiman, or crocodile acquired in this state. Requiring a permit for the possession of these large carnivores will eliminate impulsive purchases and require people to think about and plan for the considerable challenges of maintaining such animals in a safe and humane way.
